I checked out a few websites, forums and blogs to get some idea of places of interests I should visit in Vietnam. In particular, hongha’s FAQ thread posted in Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree Travel Forum is an essential read for any traveler to Vietnam.
Most of the advices I received stated that I was too ambitious to see the whole country in two weeks. They recommend a comfortable pace of three weeks instead. I attempted to list down the places I would want to visit in order to build up my itinerary. In particular, I would want to visit the 5 UNESCO World Heritages in north and central Vietnam.
The list came up quite extensive for a two week trip:
1. HANOI (the 995 year ancient city, many historical sites, museums, lakes, parks, water puppet show)
2. SAPA (mountain scenery, trekking to ethnic minority villages
3. HA LONG BAY (the world heritage, thousands of islands, spectacular scenery of grottoes and caves)
4. PHONG NHA CAVE (beautiful limestone formations, grottoes and caves, the world heritage
5. HUE (the old capital of Vietnam in the 19th century, visit the Imperial Citadel, tombs, cruise along the Perfume river)
6. HOI AN (ancient streets, the world heritage)
7. MY SON (brick temples, the world heritage)
8. SAI GON (the most developed city, night life)
9. MEKONG DELTA (floating villages & markets)
10. CU CHI TUNNELS (American War)
On my final itinerary, I might need to drop one or two places to maintain a comfortable pace and my sanity.
