My First Meal in Vietnam

Day 1: 17 Dec 2005
By the time I settle everything in the hotel, it was 9.30pm I head out of the hotel in search of a late night dinner. I ordered a place of fried beef noodle at the first store I came across. It wasn't anything to shout about. I walk on after that unsatifactory meal and came across this stored is pack full house with local people eating noodle and soup. There is even a caucasian having a meal. Surely this must be good. But everything is written in Vietnamese! Luckly, this young couple seating behind me overheard my poor attempt at ordering and help me out. They recommended squid noodle soup, which is the house specialty. Their recommendation was wonderful. It was chinese transparent rice vermicelli with fried squid. The soup base is definitely more complex than the Vietnamese food I have tried in Singapore. I ended up sharing the table with them.

The couple spoke with a slight American ascent and is able to guess my nationality right away. The lady was spending her vacation back home from study in Australia and the his boyfriend worked in HSBC. Both have them have visited Singapore.

We have a bit of a chat over dinner. I found that most Vietnamese has stopped eating chickens and eggs due to the Avian flu scare. I never found out how much that noodle cost. The couple offer to paid my share, which my soft protest is met with decline.
