Traveller's Health

I was immunized against most common travel diseases from my previous trips so I called up TTSH Travellers' Health & Vaccination Centre (Tel: 6357 2233 / 6357 2235) on the additional vaccination I might required for this trip. The TTSH operator who picked up the phone informed that the 3 staffs at the centre were too busy to attend to any query. Around 100 people drop in for travel health services during these couple of months and they can barely cope. I was advised to drop in for pre-travel screening.

Not wanting to make an unnecessary trip, I called up NUH Travel Screening & Vaccination Clinic (Tel: 6772 4462). The friendly staff advised that I am required to vaccinate against Hepatitis A and Typhoid Fever, both of which I am already immunized against. She also recommended that I took anti-malaria pills if I intend to travel to the rural areas.

The pills can be purchase without prescription in major pharmacy. I later found that they cost around $36 for 8 tablets from NTUC Pharmacy. The full course is one tablet a week before the trip, one tablet per week for the whole duration of trip, and one tablet per week for 4 weeks after the trip. I decided not to take the anti-malaria pills after going through the Health Infomation for Traveller in the US CDC website. However, I will invest in a good insect repellent.
